Owner of MochaGirl Marketplace Tracey Hairston, her husband Reggie, and their son moved into this home in Chesapeake, VA after Reggie was given a new assignment by the military. These reassignments don’t typically keep the family in one place for too long, but this time around has been refreshingly different. The trio is going on two years here, and Tracey is reveling in the opportunity to truly put down roots for the first time in a long time.

Since she doesn’t have to worry about picking up and moving, Tracey has been able to thoughtfully curate pieces she absolutely loves from both brick-and-mortar shops as well as online boutiques. “Making a house a home can take some time,“ she begins, “and if you’re patient enough to find pieces that you really love then you can build a space [where] memories are created and cherished.”

Over the past two years, the house has served as the backdrop for many special family memories. None come close, however, to the Hairston family’s first Thanksgiving all together in the home. Given their various careers in the military, it can be challenging for the entire family to get together for special occasions. That one special evening when all three of Tracey and Reggie’s children as well as their granddaughter gathered at this home to break bread and catch up was a welcome exception. Scroll down to check out the house they’ve filled with love, and enjoy! —Garrett

Tracey absolutely loves baskets, so they play a prominent role in her decorating.

This peacock chair is Tracey’s happy place. It’s where she can focus on her day surrounded by all of her plants.

The home’s entryway is designed to provide a “feeling of warmth to anyone who sets foot here.”

The couple’s son’s room acts as a guest room when he’s away at school. “This wicker wall hanging was an amazing marketplace find, and I turned it into a cool headboard,” Tracey tells us.

Many of the global accessories throughout the home were purchased on the internet. “I love online marketplaces! You can find the coolest pieces, including plants!” Tracey says.

Because they are a military family, it’s not uncommon for the five Hairstons to be in different places for the holidays. The first time Tracey had her husband and children all here for Thanksgiving is the fondest memory she has of this home.

The guest room was designed to perform a simple task: to act as a relaxing retreat for visitors after a long day.

The home’s textured walls always make painting more challenging than need be. Tracey says it’s one of the main reasons she doesn’t switch up her home’s look that frequently.

Tracey and her husband don’t use the tub in their bathroom, but their granddaughter does. She says it’s the “perfect space for bubbles!”

Tracey added this painted detail around the tub to give her bathroom some Moroccan flair.

  • All the props in the world for this beautiful home, but I am now dying to see what she could do with military housing.

  • jut a great balance of textures, patterns and color. that bubble tub! the headboard in sons room…gorgeous. i love how tracey thinks outside the box.

  • Love Tracey’s asymmetrical approach to decorating. Her love of baskets- the way she uses items in different ways makes me say W O W!!. After 30 years of military life it gives one a connection to grandparents and parents homes. I too have many pieces that brings back memories of times spent together. Also so many things to decorate a home. So like Tracey I decorate up the wall and down the wall. Every room is to my liking.
Thank you for sharing with me.

  • I’m always so impressed at how military families can make a place a ‘home’ in such a short time and Tracey is an amazing example!

(My brother and his wife as well as my uncle and aunt moved frequently, even overseas, during their time in the Air Force.)

    Thank you for your service!

  • This is so wonderful! So much fab global vintage! I particularly love the painted design in the bathroom, with all the basketry. Not sure that it looks Moroccan, but it is unique and artsy! The best picture of all, however, is Tracey in her floral dress, on her peacock chair/thrown/ happy Place!
